Let there be light. This expression is generally used to imply that keep the darkness and sadness away from yourself and let the light bring a new hope back. And our medical field has taken this seriously by inventing new technique with the help of light known as phototherapy. Phototherapy works on the principle that ultraviolet rays have healing effect on our skin. It is a revolutionary treatment for vitiligo, psoriasis and many other disorders.
What is phototherapy?
Simply put, phototherapy is a procedure which uses ultraviolet light for treatment of various skin diseases.
How is it performed?
There are various methods of phototherapy. The most advanced forms of ultraviolet therapy are Narrow Band Ultraviolet B therapy (NVUVB) and Ultra Violet A (UVA therapy). The procedure is performed in a specialized chamber. The procedure takes about 10-30 minutes depending on the dosage. The sessions are typically performed twice to thrice weekly. An intensive phase of 2-3 months is required which is followed by a maintenance phase in which the sessions can be maintained once weekly or once fortnightly.
For UVA Therapy, a special tablet is to be taken 2 hours prior to the therapy and sun exposure is to be avoided for the rest of the day. UVA therapy cannot be undertaken by pregnant women or those with liver disorders.
Are you a candidate?
If you are suffering from skin conditions like vitiligo, psoriasis, eczema etc., then phototherapy is for you. Also if you suffer from a liver or a kidney disorder or you are not responding the conventional therapies then NBUVB is a very safe option.
What are the benefits?
This is a blessing in disguise for those who don’t want to take pills or cannot take it for any reason.
